COOL, CALM & COLLECTED
WINNER: GOLD AWARD / QUALIFIED REMODELER MAGAZINE / “2008 Master Design Awards”
With an emphasis on luxurious surfaces and cutting-edge design, this petite Mission Hills kitchen — fully outfitted in the highest-grade stainless steel — simultaneously reveals and protects. Redesigned as an open living space, the galley kitchen opens to the home’s living and dining areas, connected to the home’s exterior wall of windows with unobstructed views of Lindbergh Field and San Diego Harbor.
The custom Arclinea cabinetry and counters feature Arclinea’s 18/10 stainless steel — finely polished to a luminously soft, glossy sheen. The material captures and reflects light and activity outside, with fluidity and calm — creating a luminous, glowing space that materializes or dematerializes with the changing light of day. Subtle changes in the palette and application of materials, including the natural oak floor and glass-fronted appliances, add further visual interest.
With only 140 total square feet, careful attention was paid to every design and functional detail to make the galley kitchen feel and perform as a much larger space. Antonio Citterio’s trademark elegant simplicity is evident in this interpretation of his award-winning “Convivium” concept, with exclusive Arclinea design details such as the Convivium recessed handle. Appliances are fully integrated with matching stainless steel panels, further enlarging one’s sense of space and providing furniture-like detail.
The kitchen architecture is further transformed by Arclinea design innovations. Hygienic, easy to clean and maintain, the Arclinea counters and backsplashes feature single-piece stainless steel construction with professional-grade welded sinks. Each cabinet is fully outfitted with accessories — pull-out storage trays, sorted trash bins and cutlery inserts — maximizing available storage and providing discreet stowage and access to everyday items.
Appliances specified include high-performance solutions from Gaggenau—like their wall-mounted convection oven with intuitive iPod-like controls. The peninsula is outfitted with a sleek flat-screen TV and each tall pantry cabinet hides built-in electrical for small appliances. Sleek “cabin” lights — recessed down lights with matching stainless steel trim — provide task and ambient lighting.
The national award-winning design is a highly livable kitchen that truly reflects Arclinea San Diego’s commitment to cutting-edge kitchen design in which technology is solely at the service of the everyday.
