FAMILY GATHERING

Food, family and friends are equally at home in this modern kitchen makeover, a remodel in La Jolla, CA. For
this family of seven, Arclinea San Diego created livable kitchen architecture — a design where family can reconnect at the start and end of each day, where the traditions and act of joining together at the dinner table take center stage.

The Clients, avid, hands-on cooks, are equally hands-on with their five children. They asked for a kitchen design which would include chef-quality features and functionality, while also serving as a warm gathering place for family dining and socializing. The kitchen footprint was extended so that social and functional tasks could be equally at home.

Activities radiate around the center island with its custom 9’ integrated dining table in slatted Grey Oak, with seating for seven. The linear layout features dedicated work zones, allowing for multiple cooks at once, while encouraging plenty of meaningful parent-child interaction. Work is divided into dedicated areas for storage, prep, cooking, wet work (cleaning), family dining, and a children’s’ activities.

For the school-age children: Arclinea San Diego incorporated an 11’ dedicated children’s homework station, with durable graphite laminate top with stainless edging, to provide adequate space for studies and
computer work. The kids’ area is positioned in ready reach of parental supervision as dinner is prepared
and homework completed.  

In the cooking and storage zones: Access and ergonomics are addressed with precision and care. A tall wall boasts multiple pull-out pantries and tall cabinets with solutions like pull-out drawers and trays, sorted trash & recycling, adjustable dish organizers, and more—all designed to ensure tools and equipment are easily accessible for family members of all heights and ages.

Throughout, easy-care materials are integrated in meaningful, appropriate ways. Cabinets are finished with Arclinea’s grooved “Professional” handle in stainless steel, in Grey Oak veneer, with solid wood edges — and in ecological matte white lacquer. All finishes are family-friendly, non-toxic and water-based. Countertops and backsplashes feature durable CaesarStone Quartz Surfaces. An Arclinea stainless steel backsplash and anodized aluminum accents, like the integrated pull-out work cart, under-cabinet lighting profiles with integrated utensil rails, and perforated vegetable drawers, complement.

To satisfy the family’s passion for performance home cooking, appliances include culinary solutions from Gaggenau, including the company’s Combi steam convection oven and 30” wall oven, with iPod-like controls and features like an integrated pizza stone and rotisserie.
